Nut Safety Information
Hamlin is a nut-aware school. This means that we are committed to creating a safe environment for the members of our community who have life threatening allergies to nuts by making every reasonable effort to prevent nut-containing products from coming into our campus.
Hamlin-Provided Food
The Hamlin Kitchen does not knowingly serve or use tree nuts as an ingredient in any dish, nor do we order prepared items with nuts listed as an ingredient. We follow the list of tree nuts provided by the FDA. We make an exception for coconut products, which are used in the Hamlin Kitchen. Incoming products with labels are checked to verify that they do not contain nuts or nut products.
Foods Brought to Campus
The School expects parents/guardians, faculty, and staff to be aware of this policy and to practice the guidelines listed below:
-
- All food brought onto campus should be free of nuts. This includes foods brought in for celebrations (for displays or consumption), class projects, and birthday parties. Please read the food labels on all packaged food items.
- Teachers may not distribute food or candy in school that contains nuts or nut products.
Important Note
While no one is permitted to bring nuts and nut-containing foods and snacks to School, Hamlin is not “nut-free,” and we cannot guarantee that students will never come into contact with peanuts or other nut products while at school.
Peanut and nut products are not always obvious ingredients in foods, and the School cannot guarantee that commercially purchased items were not prepared in facilities also processing nut-related products and exposed to cross-contamination.
These trustees—my peers, colleagues, and friends—joined the board in 2019. By the end of their first year, they were navigating the early onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and faced a pivotal decision: whether to move forward with our bold and transformative campus construction project amid profound global uncertainty.
