Gillis Kallem has been involved in education for the past 40 years and currently serves as The Hamlin School’s Math Specialist K-5. Across four decades in education, Gillis has stayed passionate about one simple idea: math should make sense, not just be memorized.
In this role, Gillis works alongside teachers and students to build strong number sense and grow mathematical reasoning at every grade level. Gillis believes students learn best when they understand why a strategy works, not just how to use it, and that this kind of thinking builds confidence that carries far beyond the math classroom.
Gillis earned a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, an unexpected but fitting foundation for someone who now helps students see the patterns, structure, and creativity within every math problem.
When I think about what has brought us to this moment, one feeling rises above all others: gratitude. Gratitude for the friendships formed, for the partnerships with Wanda, the leadership team, and my fellow trustees, and for the extraordinary faculty and staff who bring this school to life each day with intention, care, and heart, whether in the classroom, in the hallways, or in the quiet moments in between.
