With more than a decade of experience in independent school classrooms, Sam firmly believes in the motto “Everybody teaches, and everybody learns.” Inquiry, collaboration, and cross-curricular projects are important components of his approach, along with a strong commitment to social-emotional learning. Sam especially loves teaching math through visual modeling, cooperative activities involving real-world scenarios, and fun games.
As a native of San Francisco, Sam’s pride in the city and in California is readily apparent. He lives in the same building he grew up in, now with his partner Stephanie and daughter Anika (Hamlin Class of 2032). An alum of Town School and University High School, Sam has been inspired by many wonderful teachers. He earned his bachelors of science from UCSD and teaching credential from San Francisco State University through the Bay Area Teacher Training Institute (BATTI). Sam and his family have a beautiful home in Bali, Indonesia where Anika was born and where they continue to spend their summers. He adores animals, loves to visit museums, and has a passion for surfing. Sam is filled with wonder, curiosity, and gratitude for all that surrounds him, and he notices and inquires about small details and vast concepts beyond explanation. Through his world travels, he has opened his heart to culture, nature, and art, and he revels in opportunities for adventure off the beaten path. As a spiritual seeker, he appreciates rituals and ceremonies across many religions.
