Stacy Metcalf P’20 joined the Hamlin faculty in 1997. Since then, she has primarily taught Grade 8 English, but has also taught Grade 6 & 7 English as well. At Hamlin, she has worn many hats, having served as a Grade 8 advisor, acted as the English Department Curriculum Coordinator, coached Cross Country, worked as the Student Government faculty advisor and the faculty coordinator for Blue Stockings, Hamlin’s literary publication. In 2017, Ms. Metcalf joined the Secondary School Counseling team; her focus is on supporting students with their specific pieces of the secondary school application process.
Prior to coming to Hamlin, she taught Grade 11 American Literature for several years at Brewster Academy, a coeducational boarding school located in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. While at Brewster, she also ran a girls dorm, served as a Grade 11 advisor, and coached field hockey.
When Ms. Metcalf joined the Hamlin faculty, she was inspired by the idea that “The Hamlin School inspires its students to find the best in themselves and to contribute to the world around them with energy and distinction.” These words continue to speak powerfully to Stacy; she endeavors to help students strengthen their voices as writers, public speakers, and community members and continually invites students to consider how they can “contribute . . . with energy and distinction” inside and outside of the classroom.
Her Hamlin students become very familiar with her Ms. Metcalf-isms. Several among them are: “Grammar is your friend”; “Context is everything.”; and “Be the woman in the red dress.”
From 2016-2022, she served on the Board of Trustees for Mount Tamalpais School, a K-8 coeducational independent school in Mill Valley. She also sits on the Andover Development Board and serves as an Alumni Admissions Representative for Andover. She is also on the Board of Directors of the Columbian Foundation, a nonprofit philanthropic organization in Upstate New York.
Beyond Hamlin’s halls, Stacy finds joy through hiking, kayaking, reading, running, volunteering, and sharing laughter with friends and family. Stacy is a graduate of Phillips Academy (Andover) and earned a B.A. at Middlebury College in American Literature. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children.
